Personal, Social and Economic Education including Relationship Sex Education 

At Shanklea Primary, we use Kapow’s whole school spiral curriculum approach to RSE (Relationships and Sex Education) and PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic education). Through using the Kapow Primary scheme, Shanklea aims to give the children the knowledge, skills and attitudes that they need to navigate through the complexities of life in the 21st Century. Kapow Primary scheme covers the key areas which will support children to make informed choices now and in the future around their health,safety, wellbeing, relationships and financial matters.

At Shanklea we have adopted and embedded the shared values of Safety, Caring,Achievement, Resilience and Friendship. Our shared values are for our whole school community. 

The pupils created questions linked to their shared values so we could talk about them daily as part of our approach to behaviour and these are displayed around school.

Safety: Are you being safe?

Caring: Are you caring towards others?

Achievement: Are you working hard to achieve your goals?

Resilience: Are you being resilient?

Friendship: Are you a good friend?

The units on Kapow are split into three areas for EYFS, these include self-regulation, building relationships and managing self. The units for Key stage 1 and 2 are divided into six main areas : Family and relationships, Health and wellbeing, Safety and the changing body, Citizenship, Economic wellbeing and Transition. At Shanklea we use the mixed age planning but over the two years we cover all National Curriculum objectives.

Kapow Primary’s RSE/PSHE scheme of work covers the Relationships and Health Education statutory guidance (as set out by the Department for Education), including the non-statutory sex education. The scheme covers wider PSHE learning, in line with the requirement of the National curriculum (2014) that schools ‘should make provision for personal, social, health and economic education (PSHE).’ Children’s learning through this scheme would significantly contribute to their personal development as set out in the Ofsted Inspection Framework and promotes the four fundamental British values which reflect life in modern Britain: democracy; rule of law; respect and tolerance and individuality.

The Kapow RSE/PSHE scheme meets all the DFE requirements for statutory Relationships, Health and Sex Education and following our consultation with parents in 2021, in Y6 we also teach Sex Education. However, parents can choose to opt out of these additional sessions if they wish. We ask that if parents want their children to opt out to please contact the Headteacher, Mrs Ritson to discuss further.

In order to meet Keeping Children Safe in Education, we’ve also added additional sessions for 5/6 which focus on: Contextual safeguarding, abuse (physical, emotional, sexual and financial) child on child abuse, neglect and consent. We feel through adding these additional lessons we are ensuring all pupils are fully prepared and aware of safeguarding issues and how to report these immediately or seek further support and guidance.

Throughout school we also have ‘let’s talk’ boxes where pupils can add their concerns and in KS2 reading areas we have informative packs and posters on how to keep ourselves safe in addition to the child friendly child protection and safeguarding policy that the children helped to write.

RSE/PSHE is taught weekly in all year groups through discussion, drama and problem-solving opportunities. Weekly posts are then shared on Dojo with parents so they can continue to support pupils with discussions at home if they wish.

 At Shanklea Primary School we believe that PSHE and citizenship should enable children to become healthy, independent, and responsible members of society. We encourage our pupils to play a positive role in contributing to the life of the school and the wider community. Through The Kapow Primary Scheme pupils also explore the British Values of: Democracy, Rule of Law, Respect, Tolerance and Individual Liberty.

To explore British Values further, we also use Picture News once a week from Y1-Y6 as a class assembly. As part of this, pupils explore and debate local, national and world issues and discuss protected characteristics and their own rights and responsibilities as a member of society.

We also provide lots of opportunities for social action in school and within the community as we have:

-        Mini Police

-        Anti Bullying Ambassadors and School Council

-        Crest Challenges which support STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics)           

          all pupils Y1-Y6 take part in each half term.

-        A range of classroom and outdoor monitors e.g. playground monitors.

All these opportunities support our children to appreciate what it means to be a positive member of our team: TEAM Shanklea which is our school motto.

 Aims of PSHE

• Develop self-confidence and self-esteem, and make informed choices regarding personal and social issues

• Develop good relationships with other members of the community

• Acquire enduring values and aspirations.

Health Education

We aim to provide a variety of experiences across the curriculum that will establish good habits and develop in children the knowledge, skills and attitudes to promote good health throughout their lives. Links are also fostered with outside agencies, e.g., School nurse, dental health Educator, road safety, police, and the fire brigade.

Assessment

Following each unit, the team will make a judgement about whether pupils are meeting the expected standard or not. This will be recorded termly on our tracking system, Insight. If we feel pupils require additional help, further support will be put in place or we may refer to our school nurse.

Child Protection and Safeguarding

Pupils should be aware that the school will take any responsibility and action to ensure the safety of its pupils. In cases where the school has reason to be concerned that a child may be subject to ill treatment, neglect or other forms of abuse, staff may have no alternative but to follow the Northumberland County Child Protection Procedures and inform Social Services of their concern.
