Mathematics Statement of Intent

At Shanklea Primary School the pupils are taught that Mathematics is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. The high-quality mathematics education that we provide therefore ensures a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.

 At Shanklea there is discrete teaching of Maths appropriate to the specific year group requirements of the National Curriculum, making links with other subjects where they are meaningful.

 In Reception the children follow the Mastering Number programme. High quality learning environments and meaningful interactions with adults support the children in developing mathematical thinking and discussion. Pupils learn through games and tasks using concrete manipulatives and pictorial structures and representations which are then rehearsed and applied within their own child-led exploration. This builds on the carefully planned maths curriculum for our 2 year old provision and Nursery and forms the basis of our whole school approach to maths which focuses on problem solving, fluency and reasoning.

 In KS1 and KS2 the pupils are taught in mixed age year groups and the White Rose Maths scheme is used to ensure that children are taught the objectives specific to their age. In KS1, pupils also follow the Mastering Number programme. This is an additional session which takes place out of the maths lessons for 15 minutes each day. In KS2 the children complete Times Table Rockstars and have an additional 15 minute arithmetic session daily to revisit key concepts.

Key vocabulary has been identified for each year group and is shared with the children each lesson.

White Rose Maths end of block assessments enable progress of pupils to be monitored rigorously and interventions to be put in place. Support staff are trained to deliver interventions in firstclass@number 1 and 2 and success@arithmetic.

Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding. We use a CPA (concrete- pictorial-abstract) approach to introduce concepts with the aim of pupils achieving mastery. We want children to make rich connections across mathematical ideas to develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence in solving increasingly sophisticated problems.

Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language.

 Can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.
